Tell us about yourself and your business: Since the day my daughter was born, I’ve been a stay at home mom. But after nine months of play dates and mommy and me classes, I felt the urge to make some money and exercise my brain. I looked online for different work at home opportunities, but I spent so much time bouncing from site to site, not to mention all of the scams that I had to weed out, that I was left feeling exhausted and defeated. This is when it dawned on me, “I need to create a comprehensive resource where women can find ALL of the information they need to work at home” and hence The Work at Home Woman was born. Before this I worked full-time as an RN Clinical Research Coordinator at a Pharmaceutical Research Company.
What inspired you to start a business? My daughter inspired me to make the leap. Had I not been at home with her full-time, I probably would have never had the guts to up and quit my job and start anew. Now that I’m here, I never want to go back. I absolutely love what I do.
Share one business goal: 2011 is my year to go big and so far it’s going great! I secured some local TV coverage for The Work at Home Woman’s 2 Year Anniversary. I’m now in the process of writing an e-book for moms who want to work at home blogging – I’m hoping to have it totally completed by the end of August. Along with this I’ll be offering consulting services and a fully functioning job board. I’m very excited for the future.
What would you say contributes to your success? I love what I’m doing so it doesn’t seem like work. I’ve always enjoyed writing and helping people (hence the nursing career) and blogging gives me the opportunity to do both.
What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? Network with lots of people, but make sure that you’re doing it the right way. So often new entrepreneurs get so excited to promote their products and services that they forget about making real connections and instead go for the hard sale. If you focus on the relationship and being helpful – the rest will fall into place.

LaTersa Blakely is the Owner of Baby Diaper Cakes and Beyond & Moms Wearing Multiple Hats, offering custom baby shower diaper cakes, baby shower favors, gift baskets and towel cakes and help moms balance motherhood and mom entrepreneurship. LaTersa earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Economics from The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and a Master’s Degree in Agribusiness Management from Alabama A&M University. Her passion is making diaper cakes, gift basket and towel cakes. LaTersa enjoys attending church and reading. She also likes spending time with her husband, Eric and her two beautiful children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
